These solutions involve <strong>technology<\/strong> and <strong>flow management<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1230f19 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1230f19\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Modern tourism, digitalisation and overtourism<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c657e30 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c657e30\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As a result of <strong>digitalisation<\/strong> and <strong>instagram<\/strong>, specific areas are becoming <strong>magnets<\/strong> for tourists, with <strong>harmful consequences<\/strong> for <strong>residents<\/strong>, the <strong>environment<\/strong> and <strong>visitors<\/strong> themselves:<\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Nuisance for local residents:<\/span> noise pollution, increase in the cost of living, deterioration in their quality of life, etc.<\/li><li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Environmental impact:<\/span> ecosystems\/biodiversity are weakened and suffer from pollution. In Barcelona, for example, the number of tourist vehicles increases by 15% during the high season, exacerbating traffic jams and pollution.<\/li><li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">A poorer tourist experience:<\/span> According to an UNWTO* study, 72% of residents of busy tourist destinations feel that mass tourism has a negative impact on <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">their quality of life.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Mobility problems:<\/span> Transport infrastructures are overloaded, leading to traffic jams and increased pollution. In Santorini, for example, the increase in visitors has caused major congestion problems, prompting the authorities to limit the number of cruise passengers disembarking each day.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7cf0013 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7cf0013\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Solutions considered<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d2e60ff elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d2e60ff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #0f3bbf;\"><strong>1 Quotas, Regulation and Yield Management<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p>One of the most effective solutions is the introduction of <strong>quotas<\/strong>. In Marseille, quotas applied to the Calanques have shown promising results, <strong>improving the visitor experience while preserving the environment<\/strong>. Similarly, in 2019, Italy has introduced a quota limiting the number of daily visitors to 25,000 for Venice .<\/p><p>In Paris, the Eiffel Tower is subject to time slots that reduce waiting times by 30%. Since Covid, the introduction of time slots in sites such as museums with high visitor numbers has developed strongly. This makes it possible to <strong>spread out demand<\/strong>, and even direct it, thanks to information and <strong>differentiated<\/strong> <strong>Pricing<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong><span style=\"color: #0f3bbf;\">2 Technology and digitalization<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Technology<\/strong> plays a key role in managing tourist flows. Tools such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobility-metrix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mobility Metrix<\/a>, which exploit mobility data, help to make <strong>travel more fluid<\/strong> and<strong> reduce traffic jams<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Start-ups such as <a href=\"https:\/\/affluences.com\/?lang=fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Affluences<\/a> also offer solutions for <strong>measuring and displaying<\/strong> tourist flows, enabling us to understand them and <strong>optimise customer information<\/strong>.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #0f3bbf;\"><strong>3 Communication and nudge<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><strong>Proactive communication<\/strong> and <strong>nudges<\/strong> are essential in guiding tourists towards more <strong>responsible behaviour<\/strong>. The UNWTO&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwto.org\/global\/press-release\/2018-10-08\/tourism-trade-and-wto-joint-communication-unwto-wto-itc-and-wttc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00ab\u00a0Tourism for Tomorrow\u00a0\u00bb<\/a> campaign* aims to promote <strong>responsible behaviour<\/strong> among tourists, including avoiding peak periods and visiting lesser-known destinations.<\/p><p><strong><span style=\"color: #0f3bbf;\">4.combined flow and mobility management<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p>An <strong>integrated approach<\/strong> is needed to avoid simply <strong>shifting congestion<\/strong> problems. For example, diverting tourist flows around the Calanques or Baux-de-Provence could increase CO2 emissions.
