An interview with Rodolphe Lenoir, co-founder of IMPACT CONSULTANTS, by TourMaG
Artificial intelligence, NDC, employment, the Olympic Games… How will the tourism industry evolve? Some answers from Rodolphe Lenoir.
“What matters for companies is to have a plan, an ability to adapt and diversification options at the same time. It’s about being agile enough to seize opportunities,” says Rodolphe Lenoir, co-founder of IMPACT CONSULTANTS.
IMPACT CONSULTANTS is a leading consultancy across the travel sectors: leisure and business tourism, transport, mobility, hospitality, travel tech, theme parks - and healthcare. We have been around for a little over 3 years. The firm now has 15 people, including one in Monaco and one in London. Our focus is growth: we support companies in their growth plans, from strategy through to execution.
It is a sector in constant transformation. The first industry disrupted by the internet was tourism: the death of travel agencies was announced, and there are still more than 4,000 in France. Today the subject is AI. It will disrupt many things, travel included. Tourism is capable of adapting.
Several topics. First, teams: how do we attract and keep the new generation? We are moving from an industry of technicians to one where front-line people are more about human contact and empathy. Then technology: France is genuinely behind on NDC. Finally, market consolidation: in business travel, major consolidation with Amex GBT’s acquisition of CWT, but also new players such as Navan and Supertripper. It is a big issue for the sector, because there are people behind it: buying companies is one thing, delivering the synergies is another.
As with any change, you have to take it head-on and see it as an opportunity. In consulting, AI is major: it saves us time to do other things, and to do them better. In the front office, in trip design, AI can feed new ideas and leave more room for human interaction.
There are key moments in a trip when people need reassurance - and a robot will not provide it. The agency must evolve towards a multi-channel model, able to interact between the virtual and the real world. Value creation is tied to a strong DNA and consistency between what you say and what you do.
