Regional air transport plays an essential role in territorial connectivity and economic development. Faced with environmental, economic and social challenges, the sector is exploring innovative solutions to stay relevant in a world increasingly conscious of climate issues.
Regional flights provide a vital connection between small and medium-sized towns and major international hubs (the “radials”). These links facilitate trade and tourism, open up poorly connected regions, and give rural areas fast access to essential services such as emergency care and higher education. For local businesses, good connectivity is indispensable to attract investors and talent.
An intermodal approach - air links connected to rail networks - could also avoid unnecessary detours via major hubs.
The sector faces increased financial pressure, worsened by the pandemic: falling demand, rising operating costs, stricter environmental regulation. Public subsidies play a crucial role, but must be allocated carefully to avoid market distortion.
By adopting green technologies and improving operational efficiency, the sector could reduce its environmental impact and strengthen its resilience.
